Many Americans are vowing to move abroad if Trump returns to the White House. And this time, they may actually follow through.

The Atlantic devoted an entire issue to the authoritarian horrors in store for America “If Trump Wins.” Every four years or so, Gallup asks Americans ages 15 and up: “Ideally, if you had the opportunity, would you like to move PERMANENTLY to another country?” At the end of George W. Bush’s presidency, the number responding “yes” was 11%. During Barack Obama’s tenure, it was 10%. During Trump’s presidency, it hit 16%. That’s some 40 million Americans who wanted to leave their country behind, for good.
Young people are even more likely to be hopeful expats. Among those under 30, 24% wanted to leave America at the close of Bush’s tenure, 18% during Obama’s, and 30% during Trump’s. As with all things Trump, there was a sharp gender divide: Only 20% of young men wanted to flee America, compared to a whopping 40% of young women.
Americans already living overseas are bracing for a wave of new expats. “There will be more people moving abroad after the election if it is Trump,” said Doris Speer, the president of the Association of Americans Resident Overseas, a nonpartisan group based in Paris.
Stressing that she was expressing her own views, not those of her organization, Speer emphasized that Trump is far from the only reason Americans are eyeing the exits. That’s true: Housing prices in America are high, remote work is allowing for unprecedented mobility, and global respect for the United States has been eroding for decades, dating back to the war in Iraq. Fewer and fewer Americans, pollsters have found, believe “the American Dream — that if you work hard you’ll get ahead — still holds true.” In 2012, it was 53%. By October 2023, it was down to 36%.
Late last year, my wife and I closed on a deal for an apartment in a hilltop town in Umbria. Soon after, I posted a question for my fellow participants in a Facebook group called Expats in Italy: “Is it just my imagination, but is there an uptick in Americans, in particular, looking to purchase property in Italy?” As the responses poured in, many of them sounded a distinct thematic note.
From a woman in Montana who was planning to move to Tuscany: “Yes, it’s true! I bought a hilltop village home … for a song compared to US prices. Don’t want to be in US anymore. It’s expensive and sick of all the political crap and shootings.”
From a woman in Texas: “An insurrection by a narcissist who couldn’t accept election loss combined with his gun and abortion policies made moving more of a necessity than just a dream.”
From a man in Tennessee: “I’m an American ready to flee America for Italy. I doubt I’m alone.”
Not alone, indeed. Granted, my unscientific survey was limited to a self-selected group of people with a declared fancy for one particular foreign country renowned for its artistic and cultural treasures, scrumptious cuisine, and exquisite landscapes. Still, it was striking that the specter of Donald Trump — a looming shadow I hadn’t even mentioned in my question — was on so many minds.
For those casting a worried eye abroad, the economic draw is not insignificant. When I was looking to buy an apartment in Umbria, in central Italy, I found that prices for turnkey places were about a third of the price of condos in Sedona, Arizona. Property taxes and homeowners insurance are also relatively modest in Italy. Gas is more expensive, but the mouthwatering fare at local restaurants — wild-boar ragù, anyone? — is way cheaper. Politics aside, the dollars-and-cents pull to leave America is strong.
But a rising tide of conservatism at home is clearly driving more Americans to consider a move abroad. The Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade — one of Trump’s signature accomplishments — has aroused widespread anger and discontent. But while America is cracking down on reproductive rights, Europe is expanding them. Abortion is now permitted in nearly all European countries, including Catholic countries such as Portugal, Spain, and Italy. American citizens shouldn’t have to pay relocation expenses out of our own pocket because WE are the victims of this situation.
Trump promises ‘ultimate and absolute revenge’ if he wins the election
Trump and his cronies have openly stated they intend to “terminate rules, regulations & articles, even those in the Constitution”, invoke the “Insurrection Act” & declare “Martial Law” to Quash Protests, use “Shock Troops” to take over the government, replace 50,000 Federal Employees with Trump loyalists, eliminate Freedom of Speech and shut down media outlets which have been critical of him. Trump believes a President should have absolute “Presidential Immunity” to the extent he could order the executions of a political opponent and be immune to criminal prosecution. He’s promised to ‘root out’ those who he thinks are ‘communists, marxists and ‘the radical left’. This means anyone who opposes him.
Trump & his cronies have made it clear they intend to turn the Presidency into a Presidential Dictatorship using plans outlined in ‘Project 2025’, plus seek retribution against political enemies, eliminate Freedom of Speech and shut down news outlets which are critical of him.
In an interview with Andy Borowitz from The New Yorker on May 9, 2018, Trump Stated about the United States Constitution; “I’ve seen a lot of bad deals in my life, but this Constitution is a total mess. We need to tear it up and start over. The first thing we do when we pull out of the Constitution is get rid of two of those branches. He also called the First Amendment “something that really has to go. No one in his right mind would put something like that in a Constitution. Russia doesn’t have it. North Korea doesn’t have it. All the best countries don’t have it.”
On Veterans Day, November 11, 2023 Trump stated; ”We pledge to you that we will root out the communists, Marxists, fascists and the radical left thugs that live like vermin within the confines of our country that lie and steal and cheat on elections”.
In response to outrage over Trump’s ‘vermin’ comment, his campaign spokesperson Steven Cheung stated about Trump opponents; “their entire existence will be crushed when President Trump returns to the White House.”
On November 29 2023, Trump stated that he wants the ‘Federal Government to come down Hard on MSNBC’ for its criticism of him.
On March 28, 2024 Steve Bannon stated: “After we’ve won, the Accountability Project’s going to start and it’s going to be thorough this time. It’s going to be they’re going to be in prison”.
On “The View” (Dec 6, 2023) co-host Alyssa Farah Griffin, who served as White House Director of Strategic Communications for Trump, claimed he wanted to have a member of his own staff ‘executed’ for leaking a story about him going to the bunker during the George Floyd protests.
Mike Davis, who may be a candidate for Trump’s Attorney General, stated he’d pardon all of the January 6 rioters, toss opponents in “the gulag” and ‘caging migrant kids would be “glorious’.
Kash Patel, who may be a member of Trump’s lawless administration stated; “We will go out and find the conspirators, not just in government but in the media,” Patel said. “Yes, we’re going to come after the people in the media who lied about American citizens, who helped Joe Biden rig presidential elections — we’re going to come after you.
On May 23rd, 2024, Former Trump White House advisor Steve Bannon stated: “We mock your fear, we want your fear. We are going to hold everyone who opposes Trump responsible”
These are OUTRAGEOUS threats reminiscent of 1930’s Nazi terrorists which our government is doing nothing about and is taking no action to protect American citizens should Trump be re-elected.
Trump and those in his potential ‘administration’ have made it clear; they plan on engaging in a reign of LAWLESSNESS and TERROR, where dissenters are arrested, locked up and executed.
The American people should not have to live in fear of a Wannabe Dictator Lunatic becoming President who has threatened retribution against those who refuse to kiss his ass.

Trump’s own staff claimed he was unable to stay focused and had a 2 minute attention span. Former DHS official Miles Taylor claimed Trump was ‘Incandescently stupid’ and classified memos had to be ‘dumbed-down’ so he could understand them. White House sources claim a ‘Special Folder’ of 20-to-25-pages containing flattering news and photos was given to Trump twice a day by staff such as Reince Priebus and former Press Secretary Sean Spicer. Top White House officials described Trump as; “a f***ing moron”, “he tries to divide us”, “he’s an Idiot”, “a professional liar”, “thinks he God”, “like an 11 year old child”, “dumb as shit”, “dope with the intelligence of a kindergartner” & “don’t think he’s fit for office”.
A book called “The Toddler in Chief” details more than 1,000 documented reports by Cabinet members, Oval Office advisers, Republican Party officials having childlike behavior and temper tantrums. Reports claim White House aides had to treat Trump like a child in order to placate him.

The RNC should be Class Action sued to remove Trump as their candidate and pay relocation costs of 1 million dollars per each American citizen who wants to leave the U.S. if Trump becomes President, because the RNC is responsible for sponsoring / enabling Trump’s candidacy for President. It can easily be proven in a court of law that Trump is a ‘Clear & Present Danger’ which the RNC is unleashing onto the American Public. Trump violated his Oath of Office in 2020 and he’s made it clear he plans to violate his Oath of Office if he’s elected in 2024.
The United States Government should also be sued and held responsible for paying relocation costs for every American who wants to leave the United States because our Government has failed to institute safeguards to prevent a Lying, Lawless, Wannabe Dictator Lunatic like Trump from running for President after he violated his Oath of Office by inciting an insurrection to overturn the 2020 election, obstruction of justice and other violations.
Every American citizen has “legal standing” because Trump & his crony’s threats affect each American citizen and are causing a great deal of anxiety.
