Living Conditions At A Migrant Detention Center Are ‘Appalling’

Nationwide outcries have led to the transfer of nearly 300 children to other migrant detention facilities because the living conditions at one location in Clint, Texas, were so bad. NBC’s Gabe Gutierrez and Cal Perry join Stephanie Ruhle and Ali Velshi to break down the latest.

Nearly 2,000 children were separated from their families during a six-week period in April and May, as the Trump Administration cracked down on illegal immigration with a “zero-tolerance” policy of separating families at the border.

Trump launched his campaign for president with the same anti-immigrant rhetoric that is now fueling his nativist policies. Trump has repeatedly and falsely claimed that immigration causes crime, called immigrants “animals” and “an infestation,” and referred to those seeking asylum as invaders. This fear-mongering rhetoric is an attempt to dehumanize immigrants in order to desensitize Americans to Trump’s policies. Since taking office, the Trump administration has:

  • Ripped children from their parents’ arms and forced them into inhumane detention centers;
  • Tear-gassed families with young children at the southern border while trying to legally claim asylum;
  • Shackled pregnant women during and after childbirth;
    Abruptly ended DACA and TPS protections for more than one million young people and longtime U.S. residents, throwing families and communities into uncertainty and turmoil; and,
  • Been negligent in the deaths of at least 7 children in the custody of the U.S. Customs and Border Protection after more than a decade in which no child had died.

These anti-immigrant policies are a threat to the social fabric of our nation. As the largest, most diverse, and most progressive generation in American history, we must send a clear and unequivocal message that we oppose the Trump administration’s immoral immigration policies.
