• According to The Daily Beast, a Fox reporter “wondered how [Fox primetime host Tucker] Carlson could continue to work for the company after it was revealed that he was demanding at least one journalist be fired for doing their job.”
• A Fox producer told The Daily Beast: Carlson “acts like the king of Fox. Entitlement. Extremely unprofessional.”
• One Fox correspondent told The Daily Beast: “Honestly, Tucker is a joke, and I don’t know many in the news division that likes or respects him. He makes our jobs harder and way more dangerous.”

“This reaction to the contents of the Dominion filings is not the first time current or former Fox staffers have called out the network for being little more than a GOP propaganda shop; Fox veterans Chris Wallace, Carl Cameron, Shepard Smith, and Chris Stirewalt all agreed that Fox’s core business is not news once they left the network. Wallace called it “unsustainable” that Fox questioned the 2020 election results and downplayed the pro-Trump insurrection at the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021. Cameron said that “over the years, the right-wing hosts drowned out straight journalism with partisan misinformation.” According to CNN, Smith believed “that his presence on Fox became untenable as opinion shows on the network spread falsehoods that hosts knew were lies.” Stirewalt admitted that Fox became “an arm of a political party” during the Trump years. And there was even more on-the-record criticism of the network from former employees who said they were “increasingly embarrassed by the channel,” which had become “a destructive propaganda machine” during the Trump era”.

Additionally, a September 2019 report from The Daily Beast attributed the following anonymous quotes criticizing the network to then-current Fox staffers:

• On “The View” (Dec 6, 2023) co-host Alyssa Farah Griffin, who served as White House Director of Strategic Communications for Trump, claimed he wanted to have a member of his own staff ‘executed’ for leaking a story about him going to the bunker during the George Floyd protests.
• Mike Davis, who may be a candidate for Trump’s Attorney General, stated he’d pardon all of the January 6 rioters, toss opponents in “the gulag” and ‘caging migrant kids would be “glorious’.
• Kash Patel, who may be a member of Trump’s ‘administration’ stated; “We will go out and find the conspirators, not just in government but in the media,” Patel said. “Yes, we’re going to come after the people in the media who lied about American citizens, who helped Joe Biden rig presidential elections — we’re going to come after you.
• On May 23rd, 2024, Former Trump White House advisor Steve Bannon stated: “We mock your fear, we want your fear. We are going to hold everyone who opposes Trump responsible”

Fact Check: Nancy Pelosi never claimed to be responsible for January 6th. She can be seen on film during the January 6th attack on the Capitol asking local officials to deploy National Guard troops to the Capitol when it became clear Trump wasn’t going to deploy the D.C. National Guard.

Pelosi’s daughter is a documentary filmmaker who was making a film about her mother in 2021, and was filming in the Capitol on January 6th. She followed her mother and other members of Congress into a secure facility after the Capitol was evacuated. The footage can be seen in the Pelosi documentary, Pelosi in the House, on HBO.

The Speaker of the House has no authority over the National Guard. The Speaker of the House is not in the military chain of command, and does not have any authority to “turn down” National Guard troops that are ordered to defend the Capitol by the President.

Trump’s Lie about Abortion: “They’re radical because they will take the life of the child in the eighth month, the ninth month, and even after birth. After birth, if you look at the Governor of Virginia, he was willing to do this. He said, ‘we’ll put the baby aside, I will determine what we will do with the baby,’ meaning will kill the baby.”

Fact Check: Democratic Governor Ralph Northam of Virginia never said that. Here is what Northam said:

“If a mother is in labor, I can tell you exactly what would happen. The infant would be delivered, the infant would be kept comfortable, the infant would be resuscitated if that’s what the mother and the family desired. And then a discussion would ensue between the physicians and the mother.”

Northam’s words were taken out of context. He was referring to palliative care of infants who have no chance of survival after birth: making them as comfortable as possible for the final hours of their life at the wishes of the parents, not intentionally killing them. Killing an infant after it is born is considered murder in all 50 states. No law has been proposed in any state to make infanticide legal.

Trump’s Lie about his N.Y. Criminal Case: “I didn’t have sex with a porn star.”

Back then, Americans brushed off as hyperbole comments like his offer to pay the legal fees of supporters who knocked “the crap out of” protesters at one of his rallies. It was, thanks to Trump, that for the first time in American history, rioters stormed a democratic institution — the U.S. Capitol — to stop the certification of an election.

There are no lessons learned. Trump leads national and state Republican presidential primary polls, and his rhetoric has gone from off-the-cuff remarks to straight-up violent. He’s suggested a military general he appointed to the Joint Chiefs of Staff should have been executed. Trump wrote on his social media website Truth Social that Gen. Mark Milley’s phone call, done in coordination with Trump’s defense secretary, to China after Jan. 6 was “an act so egregious that, in times gone by, the punishment would have been DEATH.”

Trump also posted a photo on Truth Social of a law clerk who works for the New York judge presiding over his civil fraud trial, an invitation for violence against the judiciary. That prompted the judge to issue a gag order barring Trump from speaking publicly about his staff. Trump told Republicans in California that shoplifters should be shot, raising the obvious comparison with a strongman Trump personally praised: Former Philippines President Rodrigo Duterte, whose war on drugs embraced extrajudicial killings of thousands of suspects without a trial. Trump has also vowed to investigate media outlets he sees as enemies, showing his disregard for the Constitution and freedom of press. He’s called on Republicans to shutdown the federal government to stall the criminal cases against him and urged the House to impeach President Joe Biden because the “lowlifes Impeached me TWICE.”

As have authoritarians before him, Trump sees the state’s machinery as a mere conduit to his own interests and retribution, which he masks under the guise of making America great again or draining the swamp. The problem isn’t just that Americans have become numb to his remarks. Many see violence and the eroding of the institutions that keep a democracy strong as justified means to achieve the greatness that the former president sells them. It’s become part of the GOP platform to defund federal agencies like the FBI, which also investigates local crimes that Republicans themselves promise to curtail if they return to the White House.

Few conservatives seem bothered when Trump vows to use the U.S. Department of Justice to investigate his political rivals If Trump is a symptom of our polarized times, he’s made the annihilation of one’s opponents a righteous cause. A pastor’s opening prayers at an Iowa Trump rally over the weekend said, “We ask that those who stand against [Trump] be put to silence.” If reelected, could Trump incite another Jan. 6, or something worse? That’s a possibility that few of his rivals in the presidential primary publicly contemplate. Instead, many of them escalate

Trump’s violent rhetoric. If the former president considered bombing drug labs in Mexico, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis said he wants to send military troops into the country to fight drug cartels. That would be the type of foreign intervention that Republicans themselves say prevents the country from putting “America First.” DeSantis also vowed to “start slitting throats” of federal bureaucrats. Republicans who call out Trump’s threat to democracy are losing ground in their party. That’s dangerous because an emboldened Trump back in the White House, seeking revenge for his perceived victimization, could do more damage than he did in his first go-round.
